At the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory a strike is imminent. The union led by Prez is looking to negotiate a pay rise of seven and a half cents an hour.
Sid Sorokin is a new superintendent who has just come to the factory and when he meets Babe, the leader of the Union Grievance Committee, there is an instant attraction which Babe tries to resist.
Hines the 'efficiency expert' is in love with Gladys the company president's secretary, but his jealous behaviour pushes her away so Mabel, Sid's secretary, tries to help him change his jealous ways.
At the company picnic Prez pursues Gladys who rejects him so he turns his attention to Mae, a loud mouthed member of the Grievance Committee who responds more quickly and aggressively than he expects.
Sid and Babe finally admit their feelings for each other but Sid is forced to sack Babe when she deliberately breaks a piece of machinery causing a general breakdown
After a union meeting the Grievance Committee meet at Babe's house to discuss further disruptive tactics and Sid turns up to try to smooth things over with her. He becomes convinced that the union are justified in their actions and decides to look into the firms accounts.
In order to do this he takes Gladys out for a the evening to 'Hernando's Hideaway' a local night club, where he manages to wheedle the key to the company's books from her. While doing this the couple are spotted by Babe and the jealous Hines both of whom think the worst.
On checking the books Sid discovers the boss has added the seven and a half cents to the production costs but has kept the profits for himself. Sid manages to get Hasler's consent to the pay rise then rushes to bring the news to the Union Rally. The news brings peace to the factory and to Sid's love life so everyone goes out to celebrate at Hernando's Hideaway
